In Photoshop CS2 you link layers by selected them and then clicking on the link button at the bottom of the palette. To temporarily unlink one layer from the linked layers, hold down Shift and click on the link icon on the layer name. A red X will appear throught the link icon. To re-link the layer, shift-click on the link icon again.
