Finish the Sentence...with David Hobby

[cue the spooky game show music]
"Guess what? It's time once again to ask a well-known photographer, instructor or otherwise interesting person the same 10 questions and have them to Finish the Sentence! This week: David Hobby. Boo!

David, please Finish the Sentence..."

My favorite photography accessory (lights, modifier, bag, tripod) is
(right this minute) the new LumiQuest SoftBox III. It is 8x9 inches, and gives a not-hard/not-soft look to the light that I am using in many different ways

I’ve learned the most from..
My readers. Being on the receiving end of so much upstream knowledge is rather like drinking out of a fire hose.

If I could go anywhere in the world it would be_____ because….
"Anywhere" is actually my answer to that one. As long as there is not active war or bad malaria, I am pretty much ready to go there. I love travel more than any physical item which could be purchased with the money spent on travel.

My kids are getting to feel the same way, and I could not be more proud of that.

My most-used Photoshop add-on, plugin, action set (etc) is
(Dons asbestos suit.) Nothing. I do not use any PS plugins. This is mostly from 20 years as a straight newspaper shooter. If it wasn't darkroom do-able, we did not do it. Does that make me a bad person?

I love the fact that Photoshop
means that my fingers are no longer permanently brown-tipped from swirling them around in developer. But I do miss the feeling of fresh fixer on a cut finger. Lets you know you are alive...

I hate the fact that Photoshop
costs over six hundred dollars. There -- I said it.

If I could turn back the clock 10 years
I would have sold all of my film cameras and bought Google stock.

In 10 years
I want to have been a big influence in my kids' lives throughout their teenage years. Not meddling or intrusive -- just having them always know that I had their backs when they were preparing to make a go of it on their own.

If I could give one piece of advice it would be
Don't be scared of what you do not know, photographically speaking. None of this stuff is rocket science. Just jump in and play hard. Learn from people you admire. Take chances. Fail regularly in interesting ways.

Your readers can find out more about me
by going through my trash, or stalking me or even hiring any of a number of highly qualified private investigators. But you'd be disappointed in the boring quality of info you came up with. [and through The Strobist - ed.]

Ladies and Gentlemen, let's hear it for David Hobby!
[just cut the dang game show music! The audience cheers]

David Hobby shot as a staff photojournalist for various papers (finishing at The Baltimore Sun) for twenty years. In 2006 he launched Strobist, a blog that teaches photographers how to light. Strobist is now read regularly by over 200,000 people.
"Also, I actually met Scott Kelby in person once."
