You can create some interesting results from a brush if you include a pattern in the brush. After defining a pattern (or you can use one of the built-in patterns), go to the Brushes palette. Click on the Texture checkbox and use the Pattern Picker to choose your pattern. The are a bunch of other factors that influence how the pattern will affect the brush (such as scaling and blend modes), and if you're willing to experiment, all kinds of cool results are possible.
